I think Mariatu just didnt want to die, so she would rather join. Also they wouldnt just kill people they would torture them. Mariatu was probably very scared and not thinking clearly when they asked her.
Her friends and family were dying right in front of her and she couldn't do anything to stop them, so she was probably just screaming in her mind. She also had to act as if she liked watching or else she would have been killed, so she was probably crying on the inside. She probably wished she could just wake up from a dream and make everything disappear.
